A deadly altercation erupted in Santa Rosa this past Monday when a man opened fire on Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies with an AK-47 style rifle, per a statement obtained by the Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD). The suspect, 53-year-old Jose Luis Villasenor Cervantes, led deputies on a high-speed chase before crashing and being pronounced dead at the scene. The incident left four deputies wounded, one in critical condition.
Authorities were first alerted to a disturbance outside a local restaurant, La Hacienda del Toro. Cervantes, upon being confronted by deputies in a parking lot, reportedly began his assault. Despite the SRPD's statement clarifying the sequence of events, there continues to be uncertainty around who first discharged their weapon. It was during the later collision, when Cervantes's sedan hit a patrol car on Stony Point Road, leading to the fatal shooting and crash.
The SRPD’s Violent Crime Team has since been conducting a comprehensive investigation, which remains active and ongoing. In a grisly account of the events, it's estimated that Cervantes released at minimum fifty rounds from his weapon. An autopsy by the Marin County Coroner’s Office found that Cervantes succumbed to injuries likely sustained from the impact of the crash, which included a laceration of the heart and the inferior vena cava, according to the SRPD's update.
Following protocol, the incident is under an independent review by the SRPD and the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office, as dictated by the Sonoma County Law Enforcement Employee-involved Critical Incident Protocol. The injured deputies are being treated for various injuries, including a severe head wound, with Hoodline reporting that one remains in critical condition. Updates on the situation are expected as the investigation unfolds.
