Firefighters in Anderson County were put to the test this week with a blaze that broke out along railroad tracks, allegedly started by kids, with crews from multiple departments responding to contain the situation. The Claxton Volunteer Fire Department took the lead after a train conductor alerted them to the 2.5-acre fire near the Karns community, as reported by WATE. Melissa Shockey from Claxton VFD highlighted the team effort, telling WATE, "We had responders from Marlow, Medford, Karns, Rocky Top come and they did a great job of containing the fire."
Despite the initial shock of the incident, the swift response was spurred by the cooperation between neighboring districts, to ensure the safety of nearby residences, however, the aftermath of the event led the CSX to send an arson investigator, to understand the cause and to evaluate possible connections to recurring disruptions like debris on train tracks, "They have had a lot of issues in that area. Problems like laying stuff on the train tracks. Limbs, rocks, etc. All cross ties were brand new and were for repairs on the tracks," the Claxton Volunteer Fire Department expressed on social media, according to WBIR.
In a separate incident, the West Pelzer Fire Department dealt with a fire at a storage unit on Easley Highway in Anderson County. Tragically, one person sustained injuries severe enough to necessitate airlift transport to Augusta Burn Center, the current status of their condition remains unknown, the West Pelzer Fire Department was the source of this unfortunate news as shared by FOX Carolina. The cause of the fire is still being determined as investigations continue into the circumstances leading up to the inferno.
Authorities are keeping a watchful eye on the situation in Anderson County, with investigations into both incidents underway, while residents and local services alike are remaining vigilant to prevent future occurrences; video footage from a nearby water treatment plant is set to be reviewed, which may shed light on the causes behind this disruption to the community's peace, as the Claxton Volunteer Fire Department posted on social media and was quoted by WBIR.
