In a sweeping move to safeguard social media users from online scams, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, alongside a bipartisan group of 41 attorneys general, sent a forceful letter to Meta Platforms, Inc., urging the tech giant to strengthen its data security measures and protect users' accounts on Facebook and Instagram from scammers. This response comes as a direct initiative to tackle the surge in account takeovers, where fraudsters commandeer user profiles, locking out the original owners and potentially causing severe personal and financial damage.

The coalition, as reported by the Arizona Attorney General's office, is pressing Meta to critically evaluate its current data security operations and bolster its IT and customer service departments to prevent such scams. "Meta reported $63 billion in profit last year alone. A company of this size should be more than able to fund IT security and customer service operations, that can appropriately support and protect its user base," stated Attorney General Mayes. These platforms are not just social hubs but also underpin many Americans' business operations and personal connections, making the stakes considerably high.

Scammers orchestrate account takeovers by hacking into profiles, changing passwords, and then leveraging the access for identity theft, accessing private messages, defrauding contacts, and even posting publicly, posing as the usurped user. To combat this crisis, the attorneys general are proposing a slate of practical steps for Meta to implement, one of them being the significant increase in staff dedicated to addressing complaints of account takeovers, and the amplification of investment in robust account takeover mitigation strategies.

Additionally, they're urging Meta to adopt novel procedures to empower users to fend off such privacy breaches, including multi-step authentication methods. Furthermore, the letter urges Meta to elevate the gravity of this issue and intensify enforcement actions against identified scammers.

Individuals who encounter an account takeover by ill-intentioned parties are advised to contact Meta post-haste. Those who struggle to reach Meta or to resolve their issues can consult information provided on Facebook about how to handle an account takeover scenario. Attorney General Mayes joins a diverse assembly of state attorneys from Alabama to Wyoming, all standing in solidarity for the protection and digital wellbeing of their constituents.
