Two teens, described by officials as "armed and dangerous," managed to escape custody after subduing a Georgia deputy with his own weapon, authorities said. The suspects, identified as Corinthian Newton, 15, and Brandon Davis, 14, assaulted Deputy Milo Perry and fled from Jenkins County on Thursday afternoon, sparking a manhunt and prompting a widespread alert for residents to be vigilant.
The escape unfolded when the pair apparently overpowered Perry, using his gun to knock him unconscious and firing shots that narrowly missed him. Perry, fortunately not struck by the gunfire, was later taken to the hospital and has since been released, the Burke County Sheriff's Office detailed in a report shared by FOX 5 Atlanta.
After the escape, law enforcement officers from Burke County rapidly converged at the junction of Highway 56 and Knight Road, just south of the Richmond County line, to search for the youths. The teenagers were still donning their jumpsuits from the Augusta Regional Youth Detention Center at the time, according to the authorities. “The individuals were able to obtain Deputy Perry’s gun which was used to hit Deputy Perry to render him unconscious. The individuals were able to shoot off 3 rounds in Deputy Perry’s direction. Deputy Perry was NOT shot,” clarified the Jenkins County Sheriff's Office in a Facebook post, which was also cited by The Daily Caller.
Residents in the affected areas were urged to stay indoors and to cautiously report any suspicious activity they might encounter. "And report any suspicious individuals to 911 immediately," the Burke County Sheriff's Office advised, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The intense search to find the teens comes amidst another recent jailbreak incident in Idaho, where an inmate escaped following a violent clash that left several officers injured.
Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar described the Idaho situation as a "brazen, violent, and apparently coordinated attack," underscoring the dangerous nature of these escape incidents. Officials have not yet released information regarding additional charges the teens may face, nor have they commented on the circumstances that enabled the youths to initially acquire the deputy's firearm. The investigation into the bold and alarming breakout continues, with local authorities remaining on high alert.
