In an effort to bolster understanding of housing rights in Georgia, two key events are slated for the Athens-Clarke County Community, aimed at educating tenants and property owners on their legal standings and responsibilities.
Local residents can catch the first of the two sessions at The Main Library Auditorium, 2025 Baxter St, Athens, GA, where Chad McCranie, Senior Staff Attorney for Georgia Legal Services Program, will break down tenant rights and delineate landlord responsibilities. The session is set to take place on April 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., as detailed in an announcement on the Athens-Clarke County government website.
Hot on the heels of the first event, Gail L. Williams, the Executive Director of Metro Fair Housing Services, Inc., will spearhead a discussion on Fair Housing rights, and the illegal practices by housing providers. In a bid to protect tenants against discrimination and unfair treatment, Williams' talk aims to arm them with knowledge and tools for justice. Interested attendees are advised to reserve their spot by calling the Housing and Community Development Office or by sending an email to [email protected], according to the official announcement.
For those on the go, the organizers have arranged for a carry out lunch to be available during the events. While the effort to educate the locals on such a critical matter as housing rights appears earnest, actual change hinges on the grassroots, on individuals stepping out from the throngs of apathy to seize the mantle of their own fates. It's through forums such as these that the seeds of knowledge may be sown, giving rise to a more equitable society.
