Chaos unfolded within the stately walls of the Georgian Terrace Hotel in midtown Atlanta when a housekeeper stumbled upon a hefty stash of illicit goods. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the cleaning staff discovered a suspicious package on February 8 that led to a Newnan man's arrest for allegedly trafficking 10 kilos of cocaine valued up to the street's hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Swathed in black plastic that featured, seemingly adorned a cobra symbol, the drugs were hidden in a black Under Armour duffle bag in a closet on the hotel's 8th floor. Assistant Police Chief Tyus Carven praised his officers in a statement to city council members, emphasizing the department’s unyielding commitment to scouring city streets of drugs and the weapons often found in their company, "Just understand where there’s that much drugs, there’s gonna be guns at those locations," he said.
Police efforts were fruitful days after the discovery, leading to the arrest of the suspect, Voskae Wallace, as law enforcement officials linked him to the reservation in the implicated room, and surveillance footage caught him entering the hotel with the incriminating duffle bag, according to the Channel 2 Action News report. Retrospectively looking at the drug epidemic, local resident Christ Staples recounted to Channel 2 Action News, "I grew up in Miami, so remember when the bricks were rolling up on the beaches," harking back to darker times in America's history with narcotics.
Details from the case continue to draw attention, not just for the amount of cocaine involved but the distinctive packaging—each brick of cocaine was tightly bound in paper featuring a photo of a black rattlesnake. This peculiar signature has led investigators to speculate connections to a Mexican drug cartel, a line of inquiry still under active exploration.
