Austin's streets are about to see fewer e-scooters zipping around. Monday marks the start of stricter regulations on these electric vehicles, following concerns over safety and cityscape clutter.
Keeping pace with these new rules, only Lime and Bird will continue their services as the city slashes the total number of e-scooters from approximately 9,000 to 7,000 citywide, this number dropping starkly in the downtown area from over 4,000 to just over 2,000, as reported by FOX 7 Austin. These changes coincide with troubling reports of increased head injuries linked to e-scooter accidents, especially those incidents involving riders leaving downtown bars.
In addition to the cutback, officials are throttling e-scooter speeds from 15 mph to a safer 10 mph during the late-night hours of 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. This measure aims to curtail potential mishaps between scooters and cars. They are also contemplating a restriction on e-scooter parking along the Congress Ave corridor to preserve the area's aesthetic, FOX 7 Austin detailed.
Part of these sweeping changes, as KXAN reports, includes a moratorium on new e-scooter vendor licenses and the discontinuation of dockless e-bikes, which obstruct sidewalks, creating ADA compliance issues These updates spearheaded by Transportation and Public Works Department's Richard Mendoza, come after the decision to allow for exceptions during Austin's peak festival periods like South by Southwest and the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
While these changes may come as a shock to some avid scooter riders the city's decision reflects a growing commitment to public safety and urban order, a stance that awaits the true test in the streets of Austin.
