Tragedy struck early in the morning on March 15th when Jacoby Dywayne Larue Mahome, lost his life in a vehicle crash on E Highway 290 WB, as reported by the Austin Police Department – marking the city's 16th fatal wreck this year. The grim incident unfolded just past 6 a.m., near the 8700 block when Mahome's vehicle was involved in a single-car accident that led to his immediate death at the scene; a passenger survived the ordeal with injuries deemed non-fatal.
Austin authorities are currently piecing together the cause of the crash, with this fatal event bringing 2024's death toll from traffic incidents to 16, a slight decrease from the 22 fatalities recorded by the same date last year; a bitter statistic that weighs on the city's consciousness, with each number reflecting an irrevocable loss.
Though details are scant, APD is urging the public to come forward with any information that might shed light on circumstances leading to Mahome's demise—details that can either be shared directly with the APD's Vehicular Homicide unit or anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
