A California Department of Rehabilitation Officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law, charged with the heinous sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl who was under his watch. Azzan Sandhu, based in Fullerton, is staring down the barrel of nine felony counts that include the alleged sexual acts and exploitation of a minor at the Ventura Youth Correctional Facility, according to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced today that Azzan Sandhu, of Fullerton, has been charged with 9 felony counts related to the sexual abuse of a 15-year-old female incarcerated at the Ventura Youth Correctional Facility, in Camarillo.

Erik Nasarenko, the District Attorney, denounced the officer’s actions in a statement, "The defendant is accused of using his position of trust and authority to sexually abuse a vulnerable female entrusted to his care." Sandhu, who was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to all accusations, faces seven counts of committing a lewd act on a child. One count of using a child to produce child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and one count of luring a minor to commit a sex offense.
As of now, Sandhu is scheduled for an early disposition conference on April 25, 2024, his bail is set at a steep $1 million, and the prosecution is readying its case against an officer who should have been a guardian but is now branded an alleged predator. In the vein of betrayal, each felony charge comes with a heavy implicating special allegation – that Sandhu abused a position of trust to facilitate his crimes.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Tony Wold of the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office Public Integrity Unit now carries the weight of prosecution. He is set on ensuring that, "We will continue to vigorously prosecute any individual who is alleged to have preyed upon, and sexually exploited a minor," as Nasarenko stated. Details of the case point to a systematic abuse that occurred between December 2022 and February 2023, where Sandhu allegedly used his cell phone to document the abuse -adding a layer of premeditation and exploitation to the already shocking list of charges.
For the victim and their family, the path ahead is fraught with the reminiscences of horrors that should have never graced the halls of correctional facilities – places designed to rehabilitate, not damage further. For Sandhu, it is a wait behind bars until his day in court and for the law, it is another chance to prove that those who carry the mantle of authority are not beyond its reach.
