A Bastrop family was struck by tragedy last Friday after a heroic father died saving his son from drowning at Fisherman's Park. The Bastrop Police Department reported that the man was found unresponsive in the water around 4 p.m. after he had jumped in to rescue his son who was struggling to stay afloat.
Officers responded to the scene following reports of the incident, administering aid to the unresponsive man. Despite rescuing his son, the man was later pronounced dead, according to KXAN.
The man's identity has not been disclosed as authorities continue efforts to notify his family members. Officers who responded to the emergency found the man not breathing, with efforts to resuscitate him ultimately proving unsuccessful. CBS Austin reported that multiple agencies, including the Bastrop Fire Department and Bastrop County Sheriff's Office, were also at the scene to assist.
While the incident is still under investigation, the community mourns the loss of a father who made the ultimate sacrifice for his child. The man, after saving his son's life, was not able to be revived, as told by the Bastrop Police Department. The tragic outcome of this rescue attempt casts a shadow over the quaint recreational spot that is typically known for its serenity and family-friendly environment.
