Chaos struck the Baltimore Harbor early Tuesday when a large container ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, leading to a catastrophic collapse that sent vehicles plunging into the icy waters below. Maryland Governor Wes Moore promptly declared a State of Emergency as rescue teams scrambled to respond to the disaster. According to FOX 5 DC, the vessel lost power around 1:30 a.m., which directly caused the bridge's structure to buckle and snap.
Governor Moore, evidently shaken by the event, signaled to the public that while the state was in shock, initial indications suggest it was an accident. He was quick to declare the area a disaster zone to surely rally all available emergency services and resources. "Our state is in shock," Moore said, as reported by NBC News. The bridge, which is an iconic part of the city's infrastructure, is now a scene of terror and urgency, with at least six people reported missing following the crash.
Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski and the Baltimore Fire Department have been on the scene from the first light of dawn, coordinating the response to this significant emergency. Governor Moore, in a statement mentioned by WGAL, spoke of engaging federal help, "I have declared a State of Emergency here in Maryland and we are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration."
Amidst the debris and turmoil, there was a glimmer of hope in the valor of Baltimore's emergency services. "We are thankful for the brave men and women who are carrying out efforts to rescue those involved and pray for everyone's safety," Moore added in his statement to WGAL. As Maryland grapples with this tragedy, the nation watches, and the governor has pledged to remain in close contact with all agencies involved to assess and respond to the unfolding situation.
