Several Central Texas school districts, including Liberty Hill ISD, Boerne ISD, Kerrville ISD, and Lake Travis ISD, have chosen to shut down on April 8, 2024, in anticipation of the traffic jams and energy demands the total solar eclipse is expected to bring upon local infrastructures. "We are expecting a lot of people, and that is likely an understatement," Marco Alvarado said, according to FOX 7 Austin.
Boerne ISD is viewing the day off as more than just a break from school; it's seen as an educational opportunity. "It will also be a great at-home learning experience for our students. Our Teaching and Learning Department has done a fantastic job assisting with lesson plans and activities focusing on the eclipse," a Boerne ISD spokesperson stated in a release obtained by CBS Austin.
Students and teachers alike are caught in the thrill of this cosmic spectacle. Lake Travis ISD senior Rachel Yang expressed her joy to FOX 7 Austin, saying, "I'm excited to not be at school, but at the same time, I'm really happy that our city gets to see this." The distinct experience of witnessing a solar eclipse enhances the educational value of this unplanned holiday.
Notably, the safety concern is at the forefront of these decisions. Potential traffic challenges at both the start of the school day and dismissal times, on top of a likely shortage of substitute teachers as staff request time off, have prompted this proactive approach. "The decision to close our schools reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff during this once-in-a-lifetime experience," Lake Travis ISD quoted, as per CBS Austin.
