The city of Chandler is set to honor César Chávez, the iconic labor leader and civil rights activist, with a series of community events aimed at celebrating his enduring legacy. According to a recent report by Chandler city officials, the "Community of Innovation" once known for its deep agricultural roots will partner with the César Chávez Foundation to feature events throughout the month leading up to César Chávez Day on March 31.

As part of the tribute, Chandler's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Division, in collaboration with the Chandler Unified School District and the Chávez Foundation, plans an engaging event dubbed "Seeds of Legacy." This event, scheduled for March 28 at Frye Elementary, will host around 450 students from Frye and San Marcos Elementary Schools, where they will have the chance to learn about Chávez's impact and receive a book about his life, despite the fact it may be argued that not all have direct familial ties to agriculture, all benefit from his struggle for dignified work, as reported by the city's announcement. The occasion will also feature a special gift to Chávez by local artist Abigail Pacheco with assistance from youths in Chandler's Housing program.

Continuing the remembrance, Andrés Chávez, the labor leader's grandson and executive director of the National Chávez Center, will speak with city employees as part of an internal speaker series at the City Council Chambers. On the following day, March 29, Chandler's elder Latino residents are invited to share their personal stories over cafecito and pan dulce at an event titled "The Untold Stories and Cafecito," where long-existing bonds between the community and Chávez's movement can be recounted and celebrated.

The commemoration activities will peak on March 30 with a community celebration and cleanup dubbed "Let’s Pull Together in Honor of César Chávez." Volunteers will gather at a Chandler community garden to assist with yard work and cleanup, after which there will be a march to Chandler City Hall where speeches will highlight Chávez's contributions and his fight for farmworkers' rights, not only remembering a local boy made good but an international symbol for all workers and for the Hispanic community which has done so much to enrich the fabric of Chandler, as voiced by community leaders and event organizers in the official event description. Event attendees can respond to the call through an RSVP online or by contacting the Chandler Neighborhood Programs Office.

Moreover, all Chandler residents are invited to share their memories of César Chávez or his influence on their lives through photographs and stories; these contributions will be spotlighted on the city’s blog. For those seeking details on the school event, employee speaker series, or the community cleanup, Chandler provides contact information for further assistance, including for Spanish speakers.
