Chula Vista was on high alert when residents were startled awake by automatic gunfire just past the stroke of midnight. According to the Chula Vista Police Department, the cacophony originated from the vicinity of SR125 toll and Birch Road. The department swiftly coordinated with aerial support and backup from both the San Diego Sheriff's and Police Departments to intercept two vehicles swiftly departing a nearby canyon.
In a statement obtained by the Chula Vista Police Department's Facebook page, the first vehicle, driven by a 25-year-old San Diego man, had more than just a misdemeanor warrant to his name. With a host of firearm-related charges now piling upon him, he was found possessing drugs, specifically meth, while also armed. The arrested individual now faces the weight of the law for concealing a stolen firearm, holding an assault weapon, a machine gun, as well as a large capacity magazine.
The engagement did not just stop at this individual's capture. A second vehicle’s occupant, a 21-year-old woman from Chula Vista, found herself cited and released on the spot. Striking a less severe set of misdemeanors, she was accountable for the unlawful transportation of a firearm and the reckless action of discharging it within city limits.
The Chula Vista Police's deft response, aided by their partners, prevented further escalation of a situation that, as reported on the department's official Facebook page. Details surrounding the motivation and context of the gunfire remain undisclosed, as the investigation continues to unfold.
