Chaos was averted in north Hayward yesterday, when community vigilance and swift police action prevented potential danger at a local park. According to a Facebook post by the Hayward Police Department, officers received a tip about a man wielding a rifle in the vicinity of a playground.
Upon arrival, authorities located an abandoned AR-style 9mm carbine rifle – bereft of a serial number – shrouded in a blanket near the playground. Shortly thereafter, a suspect, said to be walking away from the park, was detained after fitting witness descriptions. The man was positively identified by bystanders as the individual previously seen with the rifle, the department detailed.
This harrowing incident was neutralized without reported injuries or escalation, a fact for which the Hayward Police expressed gratitude toward the community. "We want to thank the community members for their assistance and for reporting this incident," the post read, highlighting the importance of public diligence with a familiar refrain, “if you see something, say something.”
The police credited the "collaboration and teamwork between the community and public safety" for the effective resolution of, what could have been a significantly perilous affair. The suspect, who remains unnamed, is currently in police custody facing multiple weapons-related charges. The investigation continues as the rifle has been secured and taken into evidence.
