Chill out, seniors! Coon Rapids has hit the pause button on fun and games at the local Senior Center. The announcement came early Monday, March 25, as bad weather decided to show the city who's boss. That's right, no tax appointments, no bingo, and not even the Live to Be Healthy Exercise Class could withstand the snowy onslaught.
The Senior Center, which typically buzzes with the spirited sounds of activities meant to keep our elders connected and active, had to quickly shift gears and cancel all plans. A brief visit to the city's website would quickly reveal a banner notification about the shutdown. It seems like the weather was not just content to blanket the city in white but also to cruelly freeze out any semblance of Monday's merriment for the seasoned crowd.
For those who were looking to keep their minds sharp, the Creative Writers group also got the axe thanks to Mother Nature's wintry grip. Senior Services staff, however, remain available like a beacon in the blizzard, to answer calls and tend to the walk-in needs of those seniors who brave the elements.
Remarkably, the city didn't just suddenly decide to stop everything without a plan. According to the announcement on Coon Rapids' official website, those with tax appointments don't have to stress. The city has promised that these will be rescheduled. Meanwhile, the expectation is that all will be back to normal by Tuesday, with activities resuming their usual rhythm as if to boldly defy nature's chilly interruption.
The Senior Center is used to having a bustling schedule, aimed at providing social, recreational, and educational programs for its members. While the center had to take a snow day, it stands ready to welcome back its patrons with open arms and a warm space – quite literally – once the storm passes and the doors can safely open again. For now, the local elderly population will have to find other means to stay entertained and perhaps muse over the whims of the weather from the comfort of their own homes.
