A DeKalb County mother's quest for justice took a tragic and illegal turn when she was convicted of murder after attempting to confront her daughter's alleged abuser with a group of armed associates. Reports from FOX 5 Atlanta indicate Danyale Harris, 42, was found guilty on charges including felony murder and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole, in addition to five more years.
According to the district attorney, the mother discovered a disturbing video of her 12-year-old daughter in a sexual act with 22-year-old Antonio Harley on March 31, 2020. After reporting the incident to the DeKalb County Police Department in the early hours of April 1, 2020, the responding officer had warned Harris, fraught with anger, not to attempt revenge. Defying the warning, she later led a heavily armed group to Harley's apartment complex, as relayed by Atlanta News First.
The sequence of events that unfolded next led to a dire outcome. When Harley evaded confrontation by slipping out the back door and spotted Harris and her group, a chase ensued until he was safely back inside his apartment. Outside, shots were fired by someone from Harris' group, hitting Harley. In a quick response aimed to protect himself and his siblings inside the apartment, Harley's brother returned fire, accidentally striking 19-year-old Juan Newkirk, a member of Harris' group, leading to his death.
While Harris now faces her sentence, the man at the heart of her ire, Antonio Harley, survived the shooting. He has, however, been charged with statutory rape, child molestation, and sexual exploitation of children. "Harley’s brother, who was inside the apartment, fired back in an effort to protect himself and five of his younger siblings who were just feet away inside the apartment," stated the district attorney's summary of the horrific incident. Harley's case is still pending, leaving a complex tapestry of justice and retribution to be unraveled in the court system, as per the Atlanta News First.
