The City of Douglas is set to spruce up Wheeler Park with a round of improvements starting this Monday, March 11. In an effort to boost the park's accessibility, the city plans to roll out new sidewalks and ADA-compliant playground equipment. But as the bulldozers get ready to rumble, officials are warning residents to brace for some temporary inconvenience.
According to an announcement on the city's official website, the renovation works are designed to make the park a more inclusive space for all visitors. "Making these improvements will help provide access to everyone in our parks," Mayor Tony Paulk was quoted, dangling before the citizens the promise of a more accessible outdoor environment. The project is partly funded by the Community Foundation of Coffee County, who have chipped in to purchase the new inclusive playground kit.
With construction underway, the city's statement emphasizes that certain park areas will be off-limits. These areas, where equipment is being installed and landscaping is taking place, are strictly no-go zones for the public’s safety. Full details of the project and the affected areas can be found here.
Mayor Paulk expressed his gratitude to the Community Foundation, walking among the trees that had been removed, which will allow new equipment to be fitted and clear access paths to be created. The makeover is part of the city's broader push to ensure that facilities throughout Douglas are welcoming and accessible to all members of the community.
Residents of Douglas should prepare for some disruptions as the park undergoes its transformation. The city has extended apologies for any inconveniences caused during the improvement period and is asking for the public's patience as they work towards a more inclusive and accessible Wheeler Park.
