Dozens of Motorcyclists and SUV in Chaotic Collision on I-20 Near Covington, Two AirliftedSource: Facebook/Covington (Ga.) Police Department

A massive motorcycle ride turned chaotic on an interstate in Covington, leading to crashes that injured several and forced authorities to airlift two individuals. The spectacle unfolded yesterday when a swarm of bikers—estimated to be between 75 to 100—and an SUV collided on I-20 eastbound.

The group had been cruising from Fayetteville to Augusta when trouble hit. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, a “lane captain” was maneuvering at a speed meant to keep the motorcyclists together, and subsequently careened into the back of a white SUV. This set off a chain reaction, causing numerous other bikers to crash into one another in a desperate effort to avoid the initial collision. I-20 was shut for about an hour and a half as crews scrambled to clear the debris-strewn roadway.

Both victims were transported to a hospital via helicopter and are reported to be alert, conscious, and breathing. The WSB-TV confirms that the Georgia State Patrol is currently investigating the series of accidents which involved at least five motorcycles and the car.

After the emergency response team and investigators took to the scene, the stretch of the interstate near Exit 90 and Exit 92 was subsequently reopened. The identities and ages of those involved in the crash remain undisclosed as the investigation by GSP, the Covington Police Department continues.
