DULUTH — Duluth's streets are set to get safer with Mayor Roger Reinert taking the reigns on public safety "since my first day in office," per a recent city announcement. The initiatives already underway include a more substantial presence in the CORE, SURT, and CE-POP unit teams, which are pivotal in order to enhance downtown safety and support individuals grappling with social unrest through essential resources and services.
The Duluth Police Department, according to Chief Mike Ceynowa, is sharpening its efforts, escalating foot patrols not only on downtown streets but extending inside the covered stretches of the Skywalk system, recognizing the need to maintain vigilance in both sunlit corners and shaded indoor walkways, affirming community norms with increased enforcement against those soliciting contributions from motorists that's been distracting, maybe even disrupting the flow of daily grind that sees people in an out of cars, buses, into storefronts beneath the Skywalk's protective embrace. Working closely with the city administration and the city attorney's office, efforts are also invested in identifying and closing gaps within municipal codes to combat the social disorder challenges.
Duluth's approach to downtown and Skywalk safety is a collaborative endeavor to secure the area, as indicated by City Attorney Jessica Fralich. The strategy is double-edged; on one hand, it introduces innovative strategies while on the other, it strengthens the "tried and true" methods, with the addition of prosecutors to the office being a key enhancement for maintaining order in the downtown district, "The community’s safety continues to be a goal we share across departments," Fralich stated, marking a united front across civic agencies.
