A Gwinnett County man who portrayed himself as a "witch doctor" has been sentenced to life in prison after a jury convicted him on multiple counts of sex crimes, including rape and false imprisonment. Hassan Shalgheen, 45, of Duluth, was found guilty of conducting a macabre charade under the guise of an "evil spirit healing ritual" which he used as a pretext to sexually assault a woman, as per the details provided by the Atlanta News First.
Prosecutors said that the victim, whose identity has been withheld, met Shalgheen on February 5, 2023, intending to undergo a cleansing ritual, for which she paid a $200 deposit and later an additional $300 after the egregious act, Gwinnett District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson indicated that the ritual was claimed to take three hours and Shalgheen coerced the woman to wear a white nightgown and subsequently raped her, according to the DA's office in a statement obtained by 11Alive.
Duluth Police were alerted by the victim and subsequently executed a search warrant at Shalgheen’s residence, securing evidence that corroborated the woman’s account. Media attention following the arrest prompted four additional women to come forth with similar accusations, two of whom gave testimony during the trial that began on February 26 and concluded with a protracted deliberation lasting nearly a day and a half before the verdict was delivered this past Tuesday.
The news has sent shockwaves throughout the Duluth community, with residents expressing disbelief and concern over the sinister developments that unfolded in their vicinity, Duluth resident She' Lewis expressed her dismay in an interview with 11Alive, saying, "I feel bad for her and in these desperate times people are looking for something, but they don’t realize the ultimate gift is through Jesus Christ."
