Dunwoody's artistic landscape just got a colorful new addition with the unveiling of "The Landscape of Dunwoody," a vibrant mosaic that now adorns a retaining wall on Womack Road. Mayor Lynn Deutsch, along with city council and art commission members, celebrated the artwork's installation at the corner of Chamblee Dunwoody Road.
The mosaic stretches 36 feet and plays with elevation, from 3 ½ feet on one side to 5 feet on the other. Its stained glass, fused glass, and porcelain tile composition bring to life the area’s greenery and open skies. But it's more than just eye candy. Mayor Deutsch said, "The mosaic is stunning, especially when you get up close. It adds a colorful and creative touch to an intersection that serves as a gateway to the Dunwoody Village and the Dunwoody Cultural Arts Center," during the ceremony, according to a statement published on Dunwoody's official site.
Artistic duo Julie Mazzoni and Jennifer Freeman are the brains and talent behind this visual feast. The project, which was pieced together panel by panel, saw the artists splitting duties, with Mazzoni on glass and Freeman on porcelain. They managed a symphony of colors and shared how the collaborative effort turned out to be surprisingly harmonious. “We were surprised by how well we worked together,” Mazzoni revealed, further captured in weekly video updates chronicling their progress.
The concrete canvas for this creation was no fluke – it was a calculated move by the Dunwoody Art Commission, which advocated for including public art in the city's development plans. Howard Wertheimer, the commission's chair, couldn't hide his excitement: “We’re very excited to welcome this beautiful piece of public art for everyone to enjoy,” he said during an interview. “Art Commission members look forward to more meaningful collaborations like this to continue adding significant public art that makes our community more beautiful.” The city council backed up the proposal, showing a unified front in fostering Dunwoody's growing reputation for public arts engagement.
