In a power move that shook the NFC East, the Philadelphia Eagles have reportedly snagged former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley with a three-year contract worth $37.75 million, which, with incentives, could rise to a hefty $46.75 million. The deal, with a juicy $26 million fully guaranteed upon signing, was first disclosed by sources to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
This acquisition not only represents a significant shift in the Eagles' strategy towards the running back position but also propels Barkley's earnings to near the top of the league. With an average yearly potential of $15.833 million, he's set to become the second-highest-paid RB in NFL history, ESPN sources say. The Eagles have generally avoided to heavily invest in running backs, but GM Howie Roseman, speaking at the NFL scouting combine, hinted at a possible change in that approach.
Barkley's career with the Giants was a mixed bag of thrilling highs and despairing lows. The two-time Pro Bowler dashed for 962 yards and six touchdowns last season, despite a three-game absence caused by a high ankle sprain. While his desire to remain a "Giant for life" was well-publicized, his inability to secure a long-term deal with the team saw him turn down a significant $23 million guarantee, which led to his departure to free agency, as per a goodbye post to fans on his social media channels. ABC News outlined the running back's stint with the Giants, where he amassed 5,211 rushing yards, scored 35 touchdowns, and added 288 receptions for 2,100 yards and 12 more touchdowns.
Though injuries have plagued his career, missing part of four seasons out of six, including a significant chunk of the 2020 season due to a torn ACL, Barkley's talent has remained undeniable. Selected second overall in the 2018 NFL draft, he exploded onto the scene to claim Offensive Rookie of the Year with 2,028 total yards. It seems the Eagles are betting big on Barkley's ability to quickly heal and to bring his electrifying play to Lincoln Financial Field. Alongside Barkley, the Eagles have also reached a free-agent deal with Bryce Huff, further bolstering their roster, an AP source mentioned.
The move to acquire Barkley indicates a clear intention by the Eagles to seriously contend in the upcoming season, reinforcing their squad with proven talent to complement their already potent offense. Eagles fans will now eagerly wait to see how this high-profile transfer unfolds on the gridiron come fall.
