Eden Prairie is beefing up its commissions with fresh and familiar faces as the city looks to shape its future. According to a report by the City of Eden Prairie, the City Council appointed new members to its various commissions at the Tuesday, March 12 meeting, with tenures starting April 1. Newcomers Laura Herrmann and Warren Loken will join the Flying Cloud Airport Advisory Commission, while the Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources Commission will welcome Jennifer Meyer and Kirk Spresser.

Further appointments include Trisha Duncan to the Planning Commission and a slate of new faces, Savannah Riese, Shana Bates, and Jessica Oaxaca, to the Human Rights and Diversity Commission. Meanwhile, returning members like Paul Thorp, George Maxwell, and Robert Bowes are set to continue their roles on the Heritage Preservation Commission, ensuring some continuity amid the influx of new blood, Eden Prairie officials announced.

While the city commissions welcome new members, Eden Prairie also gears up for environmental initiatives. A free Woodland Invaders Workshop is on the docket for March 19, targeting invasive species like garlic mustard and buckthorn. Additionally, for those with a green thumb, or at least an interest in sustainable lawns, a virtual Turf Alternatives Workshop hosted by Metro Blooms is slated for April 1, promising to clue residents into the beauties of bee lawns.

The Heritage Preservation Commission is not just about preserving the past but also recognizing those who help maintain it. Nominations for the 2024 Heritage Preservation Award are open until April 12, a gesture meant to honor those who have contributed significantly to Eden Prairie's historic resources, as per the city's announcement.

On the infrastructure front, Eden Prairie is not sitting still. Plans for pavement rehabilitation along Prairie Center Drive are outlined with construction expected from June to August 2024. Public engagement is a part of the process, with an open house scheduled for March 27. Additionally, traffic improvements at the intersection of Prairie Center Drive and Franlo Road are anticipated mid-summer to early fall as a means to address safety concerns and improve the flow of traffic and pedestrians.

For those keen on keeping tabs on the city's inner workings, up-and-coming city meetings include the Heritage Preservation Commission on March 18, the Planning Commission on March 25, and the Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission on April 1. All meetings are set to take place in the City Center Heritage Rooms and promise to be pivotal in steering the future of Eden Prairie.
