A determined manhunt by El Cajon detectives, alongside U.S. Marshals and San Diego Sheriff’s deputies, culminated in the capture of a violent fugitive on March 7th. 39-year-old Andrew Martin, wanted for felony evasion and assaulting a law enforcement officer last year, was arrested at the Clarion Pointe Hotel in El Cajon, authorities confirmed.
Acting on a tip, the task force arrived early morning at the hotel located at 855 Sandalwood. They were there to serve a search warrant, having learned that Martin, a resident of East County, was shacked up with his girlfriend. Provided with a hotel voucher by the Sheriff’s Department Homeless Outreach team, his girlfriend inadvertently played host to Martin, escaping the very grasp of justice that sought him.
The hotel, typically a place of respite for those in need, became the site of this latest arrest, adding a twist to the Sheriff's Department's charitable housing effort for the homeless. As per his charge, Martin, who had been eluding capture since 2023, found no more corners to hide in when law enforcement closed in.
Following his arrest, booked into the San Diego County Jail, Martin must face the music for his prior transgressions. According to the El Cajon Police Department, "Detectives issued the search warrant after learning that 39-year-old Andrew Martin of East County was staying at the hotel with his girlfriend." Reclaiming such a man from the community's margins is a stark reminder of the precarious balance maintained between compassion and vigilance.
With his girlfriend's assistance unintended, Martin's arrest clearly demonstrates the collaborative efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies working in unison. Other details regarding the arrest remain undisclosed as the case unfolds and the judicial system takes its course.
