Brushing up on community health, Dearborn's Esper Branch Library is now offering residents the chance to grab essential hygiene items for free. In a move praised by locals, a hygienic locker stocked with supplies from toothbrushes to menstrual products is available to all visitors, according to the city's announcement.
Librarian Jesse Blume didn't hesitate to express pride in this initiative. "The implementation of the hygiene locker is a testament to the spirit of compassion and support in our community," Blume stated, emphasizing the goal to quickly help those in need access necessary personal care items. Sponsored by Friends of the Library Dearborn (FOLD), the locker aims to ensure no one has to go without the basics. Visitors are encouraged to only take what they need to ensure supplies remain available for others.
Going beyond just personal hygiene, QR codes festooning the locker link patrons to local resources for broader health and welfare assistance in partnership with the Dearborn Department of Public Health. Ali Abazeed, the department's head, pointed out the significance of the initiative. "Access to hygiene is a right, not a privilege," he told the City of Dearborn. The program cements the library's role as a pillar for both knowledge and well-being.
The locker setup at 12929 West Warren Ave continues Dearborn Public Library's track of bolstering public health services, including the distribution of free COVID-19 tests and KN95 masks. In line with previous campaigns, such as handing out over 5,000 menstrual pads to local high schools, the library further stamps its commitment to community health. Those looking to donate to the hygiene locker or plug into other library services should swing by DearbornLibrary.org or hit up the Esper Branch directly.
