Officials battling the inferno, which ignited amid perilous weather conditions Saturday, managed to snuff out the blaze by Sunday evening, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

With gusts throttling around 40 mph and humidity hitting rock bottom, the National Weather Service had already put the area on high alert for wildfire risks. Emergency responders converged on the scene near Central Avenue and Flossmoor Road, engaging in a persistent game of cat and mouse with the flames, which did not relent until well into the next day, as confirmed by the Forest Preserves of Cook County to WGN-TV.

Although the exact spark that touched off the blaze remains up in the air, officials have been sharp to cast the weather as the likely culprit behind the hellish scenario.
