It was payback time in federal court today as Charles Ronald Green Jr. and his wife, Melinda Elizabeth Green, received 27-month sentences each for a massive fraud operation against government healthcare programs, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. The couple from Windermere, FL, shamelessly bilked TRICARE and Medicare out of more than $75 million through billing for unneeded treatments, showcasing a disregard for a system that serves military families and the elderly.
The Green duo's play was to exploit these federal programs directly and to engineer a vast network of payoffs under the guise of "marketing," the U.S. Attorney's Office detailed. They managed to bill for unnecessary compounded medications, devices, and more in a brazen campaign to inflate profits shamelessly and, consequently, to line their pockets with kickbacks. Their strategy unapologetically reaped millions from pharmacies that paid handsomely to push through false prescriptions.
With cold calculation, as the Justice Department reported, these claims included spurious charges for pain creams and other compounded medications – fetching thousands for a mere 30-day supply. For instance, one claim made to TRICARE on May 8, 2015, hit $14,178 for Baclofen Powder alone. The court-ordered restitution reflects the hefty price of their fraudulent scheme, tallying over $4.5 million due to TRICARE and a staggering nearly $70 million to Medicare.
As U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath said, "Fraud schemes like this one drive up health care costs for everyone." Her words carry a weight that can't be overstated as they cut through to an unvarnished truth: the monetary cost upon taxpayers and the deeper erosion of trust within our health care system. McGrath continued to assert that the government remains committed "to investigate and bring to justice those who scam taxpayers and place their financial interests ahead of patient care." Statements like these showcase an unwavering stance on the matter—a beacon signaling to would-be fraudsters that their actions will not silently stand.
Indeed, the tale of the Greens' fraud is cautionary, evoking the vigilance of agencies like the FBI and the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General. "The Greens' greed cost American taxpayers tens of millions of dollars," Special Agent in Charge Bryan D. Denny of DCIS communicated, underscoring the betrayal and the consequent harm to service members and their families. With a hearing set for May 24, more claims for restitution are about to be addressed, ensuring every ill-gotten cent is accounted for.
