Raymond Chan, the former Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles, was convicted on Wednesday of a multitude of charges including racketeering, bribery, and fraud, stemming from a City Hall corruption scandal. The swift decision from the federal jury came after a few short hours of deliberations, culminating in a unanimous guilty verdict on all 12 counts he faced. KTLA reports that sentencing is set for June 10.

The corruption case exposed a pay-to-play dynamic between city officials and real estate developers. According to The Los Angeles Times, Chan was a key operative in schemes that sought to fast-track substantial development projects through City Hall in exchange for financial benefit.

During the trial, prosecutors painted a picture of Chan's involvement in a scheme also linked to former L.A. City Councilmember Jose Huizar, who is currently serving a prison sentence after his own corruption convictions. They argued that Chan misused his position, even setting up a company designed to gain from a high-rise development project while he was still a public official. "He pressured city officials to support the project and, after leaving the city employment, received payment from the developer for his efforts," the L.A. Times reported.

Though the verdict has been met with the prospect of appeal by Chan's legal team, his attorney John Hanusz insisted his client was not a part of the criminal enterprise led by Huizar. "Chan was not part of a criminal enterprise led by former City Councilmember Jose Huizar," Hanusz told the judge. The case, which saw a delay of nearly a year due to Chan's lawyer's illness, forcing a mistrial, now seems to conclude a significant chapter in an ongoing narrative of corruption at the heart of Los Angeles' corridors of power.
