Phone scammers are back at their old tricks, impersonating local law enforcement in attempts to swindle you out of your hard-earned cash. The Frisco Police Department has issued a warning that these con artists are calling unsuspecting individuals, pretending to be with the FPD or other law enforcement agencies. In a brazen ploy, they claim the potential victim has an outstanding subpoena or warrant and then demand payment with a prepaid gift card to resolve the faux legal matter.
The sophistication of the scam has reached new heights, with calls seemingly originating from police dispatch itself, making it all the more convincing and harder for residents to outrightly dismiss. Frisco Police Department took to social media, cautioning the public, "DON'T FALL FOR IT!" This latest flurry of fraudulent activity is part of a wider landscape of phone scams that continue to plague communities, using fear and the appearance of authority to quickly manipulate their targets into compliance.
Phone scammers are once again calling and pretending to be with FPD or law enforcement. They'll say that you have a subpoena or warrant and ask you to take care of it by paying with a prepaid gift card. The calls may even appear to be coming from our Dispatch. The Frisco Police Department is urging everyone to remain vigilant and to inform friends and family about this deceitful scheme. They emphasize that no law enforcement agency would ever legitimate request payment over the phone, especially not through gift cards. If you receive such a call, you should hang up immediately and contact the police directly using their publicly listed non-emergency number to report the incident. This will not only help you to stay safe but will also aid the authorities in tracking down these impostors.
Residents who have fallen victim to these scams, or who have received these deceptive calls, are encouraged to swiftly report them to the Frisco Police Department. By collating such reports, law enforcement hopes to better understand the operation of these scams and to possibly put an end to locate those responsible. Until then, community awareness and caution are the best defense against these predatory calls trying to exploit the unwary.
