The clock is ticking for Georgia's early birds looking to cast their votes ahead of the presidential primary this Tuesday. With the early voting period wrapping up today, approximately 370,000 Georgians have already made their picks, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Despite only presidential candidates appearing on the ballot this round, turnout has reached about 5.5% of the 6.9 million active voters in the state.
Voting precincts are open today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for those looking to beat the Election Day lines, according to WSB-TV. In contrast with the day of the primary, voters are free to cast their ballots at any early voting location within their county. Remember, one of seven forms of photo ID is required to vote in person.
Cobb, DeKalb, and Fulton counties have seen the highest number of voters coming through, having Tuesday witnessed as the busiest day of early voting this week. Meanwhile, the chase is on for the presidential hopefuls with both current President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump holding their ground in Georgia. Each is setting out to rally their bases ahead of the primary finish line.
Biden is expected to immerse himself in metro Atlanta's diverse vibrant communities, details of which have yet to be disclosed. Baby steps away, Trump is eyeing Rome in northwest Georgia for his rally, signaling the strong conservative support in the district of Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at the Forum River Center, supporters can grab their general admission tickets through registration, highlighted by FOX 5 Atlanta.
After this primary's results are tallied up, voters won't have long to catch their breath. They'll be back at the polls come May 21 for the congressional primaries and other local and state races. Georgia operates under an open primary system, yet those who cast their primary votes come runoff time, they'll be locked into their initial party's ballot. Voters wishing to confirm their registration status or peek at sample ballots can do so on the Georgia Secretary of State's My Voter page.
