A beloved summer tradition is rolling back into action as the Getty Drive-In announced its 81st season opening this Friday. For more than eight decades, the Getty has served as a nostalgic bastion for movie lovers, offering a blend of both contemporary blockbusters and cherished classics under the stars of West Michigan, according to FOX17Online.
With its first screening set for Friday, March 29, the drive-in is slated to present three double features, including hits like "Godzilla X Kong" paired with "Wonka," and "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" alongside "Demon Slayer," as reported by WZZM13. The lineup also features family-friendly animations "Kung Fu Panda" and "Trolls Band Together," ensuring a range of entertainment for all ages.
Chad Gemzer, General Manager of the Getty, highlighted renovations made to enhance the customer experience. "We spruced up the stand during our off-season,” Gemzer told WOODTV. “It has retained an old school charm, but fresh paint and new equipment are welcome updates." The concession stand isn't the only nostalgic aspect attracting guests; the theater's classic film series, where iconic movies like "Twister" will be shown for just $5, adds to the retro ambiance.
The season premiere isn’t just about the flicks; it’s a full-scale event. Emily Loeks, Director of Community Affairs for Studio C, painted a vivid picture of the drive-in's intimate setting: "Kids run around in flip flops and barefoot, set up camp chairs, string hammocks between cars and make expeditions to the playground and concession stand. It's a memorable way to experience a movie," Loeks conveyed to WZZM13. Friday’s first 50 cars will be gifted with a free Getty sticker and a "your choice, our treat" coupon redeemable at that same charming concession stand.
Fans of the drive-in cinema can expect a parade of other new releases throughout the season, including eagerly awaited films like "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," "Despicable Me 4," and "Deadpool 3." For the complete list of what's in store and classic movie dates, eager moviegoers can follow updates from the Getty. The theater invites all to indulge in the simplicity of a bygone era, brought forth into modern times with crystal clear digital projection and sound broadcast via FM radio signal. The gates open on Friday at 7:30 p.m., with the first showing commencing at 8:30 p.m., ready to bring another season of drive-in delights to the community of West Michigan.
