Governor Tina Kotek Prioritizes Tribal Engagement with Visit to Confederated Tribes of SiletzSource: Oregon Governor's Office

Gov. Tina Kotek and her wife, Aimee Wilson, recently visited the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians as part of an initiative to engage with all nine federally recognized tribes in Oregon this year. The state's new head took a deep dive into the tribal culture and issues, underscoring her administration's commitment to strengthening ties with indigenous communities.

In a move aimed at acknowledging and understanding the depth, and nuance of native issues, the governor’s visit included discussions on health, housing, education, and the preservation of cultural heritage. "It was an honor to spend a day with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, deepening our understanding of their history and rich heritage," Kotek said, according to a press release. The visit signals a turn toward more inclusive policy-making that factors in the voices of those all too often left at the margins.

The governor's itinerary was packed with activities designed to provide a firsthand look into the Tribe's initiatives and concerns. The day kicked off with a reception at the Tribal Council chambers, a visit to the Siletz Community Health Clinic, and a tour of the Garden Program, which focuses on providing healthy, locally-grown produce to tribal members.

But the visit was more than just a policy tour; it was also a cultural exchange. Kotek and Wilson were treated to a traditional feather dance by CTSI youth in the Tribe's Dance House, and spent time at the CTSI museum repository learning about Siletz's storied past, and ongoing efforts to keep their traditions alive. "It was a special day; the Tribe very much appreciated the all-day visit and looks forward to working with the governor and her staff," Tribal Chairman Delores Pigsley said, as reported by the Oregon government's newsroom.

The day concluded at the Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, showcasing the economic initiatives taken by the Tribe. With this visit, Kotek has laid the groundwork for what she promises will be a new era of collaboration between the state government and tribal nations in Oregon.
