After a devastating fire gutted its kitchen and HVAC system, Grand Rapids Brewing Co. has officially announced its decision to close permanently, ending an 11-year run of pouring pints for the local community. This farewell not only marks a loss for the beer enthusiasts of Grand Rapids but also closes a chapter on a space once resonating with camaraderie and shared experiences.
The brewery had initially planned for a temporary shutdown following the blaze on Feb. 23. However, the damage proved determinative., solidifying the owners' choice to not resume operations. Speaking to FOX 2, they conveyed deep appreciation for their staff, patrons, and the timely response of the fire department in battling the flames.
In a highly personal touch, Grand Rapids Brewing Co.'s social media announcement reflected on the role played by the establishment in the weave of the city's life. "Downtown Grand Rapids has been our cherished home, where each pint represented craftsmanship, community, and resilience," CEO Ned Lidvall of Project BarFly, the parent company, stated according to a WOODTV release.
Longtime patrons were taken aback by the news, with surprise lacing their reactions. Isaiah Sills, a regular at the brewery expressed his disbelief to WOODTV, "I definitely thought they were going to be able to pick themselves up by their bootstraps, and reopen," he said. The brewery has not yet indicated if they are seeking a new location, leaving the future uncertain for this local favorite.
The legacy of Grand Rapids Brewing Co. stretched beyond its own timeline, as homage to an earlier namesake founded in 1893. The present establishment, located at 1 Ionia Ave. SW, gave a nod to this history upon opening its doors in 2012 under the guidance of former HopCat owners Mark Sellers. As reported by MLive, the brewery holds onto hope to "once again call Grand Rapids home." Until then, 1 Ionia Ave. SW bids its final adieu as the Grand Rapids Brewing Company pours its last.
