Hamilton Township Officer Hospitalized After Shooting During Domestic Call

A police officer in Hamilton Township, New Jersey was hospitalized following a shooting incident while responding to a domestic violence call on Friday night. The violence erupted around 10 p.m. on the 1800 block of Orchard Avenue, launching area residents into a state of shock and uncertainty.

According to CBS Philadelphia, a suspect is said to have fired at officers upon their arrival at the scene. The officer, whose identity was not immediately released, was transported to Capital Health-Fuld and is expected to make a recovery. Besides the officer, another individual was reported to have been shot during the intense altercation, details of whom the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office withheld.

Residents were abruptly awakened to the sound of gunfire, "We were laying in bed sleeping and we started hearing gunshots," recounted Elizabeth Juliff in a statement obtained by CBS Philadelphia.

Amid the chaos, reports surfaced from a witness claiming that police were shooting into the house where the domestic call originated. "He's seen the cops out front of the house, shooting into the house," a neighbor claimed in an interview with WPVI. The condition of the second individual shot has yet to be disclosed.

The investigation is carried out by the New Jersey Attorney General's Office proceeds. Local eyewitnesses, still trying to process the night's events, shared their disbelief. "It was loud. We didn't think it was gunshots, we thought it was a car backfiring," told one neighbor to NBC Philadelphia. "It's a little crazy because I know them."
