Houston is grappling with a startling increase in white supremacist incidents, mirroring a disturbing nationwide trend. The ADL's Center on Extremism reported a 28% surge in propaganda distribution incidents in Houston during 2023, resulting in over 27 events, according to a Houston Chronicle piece. More broadly, the United States saw more than 7,500 such incidents last year, a 12% increase from the year prior, with Texas ranking as the second-worst offender. The report highlights the unsettling prevalence of groups like Patriot Front, which is described by the ADL as one of the nation's largest white supremacist organizations.
The ripple of white supremacist activity extends beyond Houston proper, with surrounding cities like Galveston and Katy reporting similar events, a trend likely underreported due to the reliance on public reporting to track these incidents. In 2023, Texas led the way in publicly-held white supremacist events, said Mark Toubin, regional director of ADL's southwest branch, signaling a pattern of growing extremist behavior that gained a foothold around 2016 and further exacerbated by political rhetoric and the connectivity afforded by the internet.
Already in 2024, high-profile supremacist expressions have scarred the city, including January's gathering on a Houston bridge, where Nazi symbols and the mantra "make America white again" were brazenly displayed, as detailed in the Chronicle's report.
According to the ADL's annual assessment, the scenario is grim with records broken for the second consecutive year; antisemitic propaganda rising by 30% and anti-LGBTQ+ messaging by a massive 141%, reflecting a national surge orchestrated by groups like Patriot Front accused of spearheading this ideologically toxic crusade. The Patriot Front, in fact, is pinpointed by the ADL for 60% of 2023's propaganda distributions across the U.S., shirking traditional white supremacist imagery for more ambiguous "patriotic" themes, although last year it marked a return to openly antisemitic rhetoric, introducing phrases like "No Zionists in government, we serve one Nation." in their propaganda.
While Patriot Front's agenda is alarming, they're not alone; the National Justice Party and Goyim Defense League likewise bear significant responsibility for the spread of such harmful propaganda. The report highlights that more than 50 white supremacist groups were active last year, with these three accounting for 92% of the activity, illustrating an organized and persistent effort to propagate hate and division.
