Inclement weather including thunderstorms and heavy rainfall is on course to batter parts of North Carolina, East Tennessee, and Southwest Virginia. Early Friday morning, forecast that the incoming cold front is expected to bring tumultuous weather conditions today before simmering down tonight, as reported by the National Weather Service in Morristown.
Residents are bracing for what could be a turbulent day, the NWS warning that some regions, notably the Cumberland Plateau and Southeast Tennessee may see strong thunderstorms in the morning with potential for downed trees and power lines, in an update which they asserted that "localized downed trees and power lines may come down with higher wind gusts"; while the possibility of localized flooding looms where the heaviest rains might occur. The bad weather is predicted to subside by the weekend with no severe conditions anticipated after today's blast.
Today's outlook anticipates 100% chance of showers and thunderstorms primarily before 2pm, alongside patchy fog that is expected to clear up by noon, indicates the National Weather Service. Temperatures are likely to hover around a high of 69 with southwest winds blowing at 10 to 15 mph, gusting up to 20 mph; and rainfall could total between a quarter and half an inch.
While the storms are set to ease by evening, the chance of precipitation remains at 60% with continuous showers and potential thunderstorms until 1am followed by, a brief period of possible showers between 1am and 2am, after which the weather will begin to clear, leading into a relatively mild weekend with patchy fog in the early hours of Saturday but progressing to mostly sunny conditions and a high near 68. The rest of the week forecasts a mix of clear skies and partial cloudiness, with temperatures making a gradual climb back up to the in the upper 60s by Thursday.
