A high-speed police chase starting near Birmingham, Alabama, ended in gunfire on the highway in Haralson County, Georgia, authorities said. The chase began in the early hours of Saturday and crossed state lines, causing Interstate 20 to shut down as the situation escalated into a shootout with the suspect.
The pursuit, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, was joined by Haralson County deputies at the Georgia state line around 4 a.m., March 23. It came to a climax when the fleeing car spun out near mile marker 2, leading the driver to open fire on deputies and officers who decisively, returned fire.
No injuries were reported among the law enforcement officials involved in the incident. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) confirmed the driver, 29-year-old Marcus Andrew Eaddy, was shot and is currently in critical condition. The GBI also recovered a handgun close to Eaddy and found an assault rifle in his vehicle.
According to 11Alive, traffic was significantly disrupted, with Interstate 20's lanes shut down for a period following the confrontation. The closure resulted in a substantial backup, creating delays that snarled traffic for miles into Alabama.
The GBI is leading the investigation into the incident and is expected to release additional details. This event was one of three overnight shootings in the metro Atlanta area that involved law enforcement, with the two others resulting in fatalities.
