A vigil lit by the somber glow of candles marked the remembrance of Diamond Brigman, a 36-year-old transgender woman whose life was cut short by gunfire in Houston's Museum District. Friends, family, and even strangers gathered on Sunday to honor a woman described as "an incredible light" in their lives, reported KHOU.

Tragedy struck in the early hours of March 16 as Brigman stood near Country and Club Creek Streets. She was shot multiple times by an individual who exited a white Chevy Malibu, as described by the FOX 26 Houston report. Police have since recovered the vehicle, but the suspects remain at large, and no arrests have been made.

Amid the unfolding investigation, community leaders express concern over what appears to be a disturbing pattern of violence against transgender people. "Just on Saturday, we had another one of our siblings who came to our office who was brutalized and attacked in the same neighborhood," told Verniss McFarland, Founder of The Mahogany Project, to KHOU. The Mahogany Project offers resources to trans and queer people of color, where Brigman was also a member.

Speaking about the loss of Diamond, Atlantis Narcisse, Founder of Save Our Sisters United, emphasized the fundamental humanity of those killed, stating to FOX 26 Houston, "This has nothing to do with identity. We lost a human body. Somebody's child. Somebody's loved one. Somebody's cousin, whatever...we lost a human being." Narcisse and others call for increased visibility and support for the trans community, especially Black trans individuals, who face disproportionate violence.

Statistics bear witness to a grim reality; as KHOU reports, at least 32 transgender individuals were murdered in 2023, the majority being people of color and specifically Black trans women. In their grief, advocates, and friends of Brigman urge action and solidarity to prevent such senseless tragedies from becoming an unending cycle.

Houston police are requesting anyone with information about Brigman's murder to step forward and contact them or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
