A man suspected of breaking into cars at a Houston apartment complex was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by a deputy, authorities said. The incident occurred at 9150 State Hwy 6 North near 290, where Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to reports of suspicious individuals possibly tampering with vehicles.
Upon arriving, one deputy encountered a black male, 24, who matched the description and appeared to be carrying a pistol. Commanding the suspect to comply, the deputy was forced to open fire as the man accessed a vehicle, according to an official statement from the Harris County Sheriff, Ed Gonzalez on X. "A pistol is in plain-view inside the vehicle," the Sheriff detailed. The deputy involved in the shooting has been with the department for about two years.

No deputies were injured during the confrontation. The suspect, whose identity has not been released but who has been confirmed to be on parole with a lengthy arrest record, was taken to a hospital after the deputies administered first aid at the scene. Post-surgery, the man is listed in serious condition but is expected to survive, as the Sheriff's Office reported.
The Sheriff's Office CSI and Homicide Investigators are conducting criminal and administrative investigations into the shooting. It has been standard practice to place the deputy on administrative leave during such an inquiry. "The DA’s office is on-scene conducting their investigation," Sheriff Gonzalez added. Details remain limited, and updates are anticipated as the investigation proceeds.
