Thieves target these emissions-control devices for their small but lucrative content of metals like platinum, palladium, or rhodium.
With the Toyota Prius and Tacoma topping the list of prime targets, opportunistic pilferers have residents on high alert. To combat the thefts, law enforcement officials urge the public to follow a suite of preventive measures. Among them, parking in well-lit areas, locking vehicles in garages, and investing in anti-theft devices like catalytic converter covers or car alarms that react to vibration. Moreover, authorities suggest a more personal touch – engraving your license plate number on the converter itself to aid traceability, a tip that might deter some thieves looking for an untraceable score.
The traction of these auto-related larcenies has prompted legislative action by the City. In a bold move, Ordinance 4251 was enacted to strike at the heart of the secondary market for these stolen goods. The ordinance has made it unlawful for individuals, save for licensed Core Recyclers, to be in possession of a detached catalytic converter without proper documentation proving ownership. This legal measure aims to chain down the frequency of catalytic crimes in the local area.
