The Internal Revenue Service, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, has introduced a new tax filing option for residents in 12 states, called "IRS Direct File." Launched yesterday, this program offers a free alternative to services like TurboTax and H&R Block. Direct File enables eligible taxpayers to manage and submit their tax returns online, without the burden of additional fees, as reported by ABC15.
The IRS Direct File initiative, conceived with the backing of President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, which shoveled $80 billion into reforms at the IRS, earmarks the potential for 19 million taxpayers to file their returns sans cost this tax season, the Treasury Department projects. A recent rollout included a Spanish version of the service, after successful piloting, to build on the inclusivity of the endeavor. However, not everyone's on board with this new move. Tax preparation businesses brush off the necessity of such a service, claiming free alternatives already litter the market. Offering insight into the scope of the program, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo said, "Direct File ensures taxpayers get their full refund by showing them the numbers and explaining credits they are eligible for," according to the U.S, Department of the Treasury.
The Direct File service burst onto the scene earlier in January for state and federal government employees in selected locales. Now, the program's embrace, stretches to a broader audience across Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. However, the service does have its current limits, handling primarily income from employers, unemployment compensation, and Social Security, but it shies away from the likes of payment apps, online marketplace income, or gig economy earnings, and stops short of managing itemized deductions.
In the words of National Economic Advisor Lael Brainard in a U.S. Department of the Treasury press release, "Direct File will offer millions of Americans a free and simple way to file their taxes, with no expensive and unnecessary filing fees and no upselling, putting hundreds of dollars back in the pocket of working families each year, consistent with President Biden’s pledge to lower costs." The intent of the Direct File system is to cushion Americans from the often pricey and perplexing ordeal of tax preparation, which can nibble away at the refunds and earnings rightfully belonging to them. Officials aspire to see at least 100,000 people take advantage of Direct File in its inaugural year.
