A 58-year-old motorcyclist, identified by Phoenix police as Michael John Webb, died Friday after a hit-and-run collision near 33rd Avenue and Cactus Road in north Phoenix, according to investigators. Officers found Webb unresponsive on the north side of Cactus Road and took him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. By the time officers arrived, the vehicle that struck him had already left the scene, police said.
Police: Driver Sped Off After Crash
Detectives from the Phoenix Police Department's Vehicular Crimes Unit say early findings indicate the striking vehicle was traveling west on Cactus Road and failed to yield before hitting Webb on the north side of the roadway. The vehicle was gone when officers got there, according to investigators. Those details and Webb's identity were first reported by KTAR.
Hit-And-Run Crashes Are Rising
National data show hit-and-run collisions have climbed in recent years. A March 2026 research brief from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that a record share of crashes in 2023 involved drivers who fled. Closer to home, families and advocates in north Phoenix have pushed for more investigative resources after other deadly hit-and-runs in the area. Hoodline previously covered one family's ongoing search for answers in a separate Dunlap Avenue case. Police say even brief doorbell or traffic-camera clips can be crucial to tracking down drivers who take off.
Potential Charges
Under Arizona law, leaving the scene of a crash that results in death or serious physical injury is a felony. A.R.S. § 28-661 outlines the felony classifications, potential license-revocation periods and other consequences. Whether prosecutors pursue felony hit-and-run charges in this case will depend on what investigators determine about how the collision occurred and what evidence detectives are able to develop about the driver.
How To Help Investigators
Detectives are asking anyone with video or information about the collision to contact the Phoenix Police Department. The department's media advisories page lists ways to reach investigators and provides updates on fatal-collision investigations. According to police, witnesses who want to remain anonymous can submit tips through Silent Witness.
The Vehicular Crimes Unit continues to investigate and has not announced any arrests or released a suspect description. KTAR first reported the crash and identified the victim as Michael John Webb, 58.
