A juvenile suspect was apprehended after allegedly firing shots at Anaheim police officers, initiating an intensive search that culminated in his arrest without further incident. The encounter occurred in the early hours of Sunday when police confronted a group of individuals on the 300 block of W. Guinida Lane around 1:45 a.m. One of the adolescents reportedly shot at the officers before fleeing the scene on foot.
According to a statement obtained by the Anaheim Police Department, during the standoff, the suspect managed to fire multiple rounds at law enforcement officers before making a quick escape. "Fortunately, the officers and members of the community were not struck by gunfire," the department said. It was also noted that officers did not fire back and instead called for backup to assist in tracking down the assailant.
The extensive hunt for the suspect spanned several hours, involving numerous officers and the Department's Tactical Response Group (TRG). The break in the case appeared to have come after detectives saw the suspect’s mother departing the area, prompting them to notify other law enforcement agencies of their observations.
The collaborative effort to apprehend the suspect came to a head shortly after information was broadcasted, with deputies from the Orange County Sheriff's Department successfully finding and arresting the young suspect in Mission Viejo. The arrest occurred "without incident," as per an Anaheim Police Department release.
The suspect has now been detained at Orange County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer among several other unnamed offenses. Due to the suspect's minor status, his identity remains shielded from the public. CBS Los Angeles reported that anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to reach out to the APD's Gang Unit Detectives.
