Conyers has a new city manager in the wings, and it's an insider. Kameron Kelley, who has been serving as the chief operating officer, will step up to the plate as city manager starting June 1, 2024. Kelley is no stranger to city hall, having been a part of the team since 2010. With roots in Rockdale County, and educational credits from Clayton State University and Bellevue University, Kelley's been instrumental in pushing major tech overhauls and played a key role in shaping the new City Hall, according to a recent announcement by Conyers Mayor Vince Evans and the City Council.
Replacing Tony Lucas, who is checking out after a nearly four-decade career in public service, Kelley's appointment was a shoo-in. His resume boasts oversight of multiple city departments including Planning and Inspections and the Georgia International Horse Park. Lucas, set to retire in May, has voiced his confidence in Kelley's capabilities. "I look forward to working alongside Kameron in a new capacity in the coming months knowing he is taking the reins upon my retirement," Lucas told Conyers official news portal. He praised Kelley's leadership, strategic planning skills, and innovative approach.
Mayor Evans and the council had their work cut out for them, interviewing four senior staff members before deciding on Kelley. With the entire team showing strong chops for the role, the choice was tough but Mayor Evans is sure they've hit the mark with Kelley. "The council and I began discussing options for a new city manager and it was an easy decision to stay in-house when considering candidates given the immense knowledge, talent, and longevity of our staff," Evans said about the process. Kelley himself is raring to take on the challenge, ready to propel Conyers into a brighter future. "It has been my privilege and honor to serve the citizens of Conyers. As we move forward, I am committed to furthering our mission to make Conyers a thriving, vibrant, and safe community," Kelley affirmed in his statement.
The baton handover will occur just after Lucas's departure, ensuring a smooth transition. Kelley's previous work and leadership within the city hint at a tech-savvy and innovative approach to managing Conyers's future. Details of Kelley's ascent and the city's initiatives can be sussed out on their website or through the Conyers Connect mobile app, for those interested. With his sleeves already rolled up, Kelley seems poised to steer Conyers into its next chapter.
