Knox County Schools is gearing up for a hefty $39 million boost in salaries in a bid to keep their educators' pay competitive with neighboring districts, officials revealed. A study conducted by Evergreen Solutions and presented on March 4 has painted a stark picture with Knox County's teacher salaries lagging behind by 7% to 9% when sized up against twenty other districts.

Teachers’ take-home satisfaction scored a lowly 3.9 out of 10, according to the survey of more than 3,000 staff members accessed by WBIR. The focus groups, meanwhile, have not shied away from criticizing the current pay as inadequate against the county’s rising living costs. Kristen Fitzpatrick of Evergreen Solutions proposed a sweep of changes including a simpler, more robust salary structure aimed at tackling these issues headlong.

Under the proposed revamp, novice teachers with bachelor's degrees would see starting salaries climb to $47,011, escalating to $74,524 as they advance through a 20-step career progression. "With regular raises, that would put the district on track to hit starting salaries of $50,000 for teachers by 2027, when a new state law requiring that minimum salary kicks in," Fitzpatrick said, according to BNN Breaking.

This bold new salary schedule is slated to go before the school board next month, before becoming a part of next year's budget considerations, Jennifer Hemmelgarn, Knox County's assistant superintendent of business and talent, confirmed, as reported by Knox News. Addressing the compensation problem, Hemmelgarn stated, "Our people are our greatest asset," elevating the urgency of this financial adjustment to reflect the dedication and skill of local educators.
