To make outdoor play more accessible to all children, Knox County officials are moving forward with plans to update and expand park facilities in the Hardin Valley area. According to WATE, Commissioners Kim Frazier and Terry Hill have announced a new ADA-compliant playground is slated for installation at the Hardin Valley Community Park off Hickory Creek Road. This initiative aims to include playground staples such as slides, swings, and adequate shade for those hot Tennessee afternoons.
The expansion doesn't stop there. Additional reports from Ground News suggest that the county plans to upgrade Hardin Valley Community Park and add a new accessible playground at Melton Hill Park, on Williams Bend Road. The inclusion of state-of-the-art, accessible playground facilities underscores a broader push within the county to enhance recreational areas for a growing population.
With spring on the brink of blooming, Hardin Valley families have something extra to look forward to. As Knox News details, alongside the aforementioned park upgrades, Hardin Valley is also set to see the opening of two new playgrounds in the coming months. The news of these developments comes with a side of relief for residents who have felt the area's recreational facilities have not been keeping pace with its rapid growth.
"Hardin Valley is the fastest growing area in Knox County, but we haven’t kept pace with the greenways and parks," Commissioner Frazier told Knox News. She further added, "I’ve lived in Hardin Valley for 27 years, and for as long as I can remember we have needed some enhancements, new builds, and gathering places for Hardin Valley families. Now we’re going to have that." This community-centric approach is a cornerstone of the commissioners' advocacy, rooting back to their efforts with the Northwest Sector Plan and Mill Creek Middle School.
The overall project reflects an understanding of the importance of play in a child's development and the necessity for inclusive spaces that cater to children of all abilities. While the specific timelines for completion of the playgrounds have not been disclosed, the enthusiasm from local officials and the Hardin Valley community indicates that these new facilities will be a welcomed addition to the area's growing landscape.
