Knoxville residents may need to keep their umbrellas handy as the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts a wet and foggy week. Today's weather is characterized by showers, particularly concentrated before 3 pm, with patchy fog lingering until 5 pm. Despite a Northeast wind of around 5 mph, the conditions are such that visibility is reduced to five miles, presenting a dreary scenario for commuters.
The NWS detailed forecast shows a 100% chance of rain today, promising a significant quarter to half an inch of precipitation. According to NWS Knoxville, the fog will briefly exit tonight, only to make an encore after 1 am. With a murky curtain drawn over the skies, temperatures are expected to hover around the 50-degree mark, and a calming North wind at 5 mph might offer a slight reprieve from the damp conditions.
Thursday offers a glimpse of respite as the fog is predicted to clear by 8am, leading to partly sunny skies and a more comfortable high nearing 67 degrees. As we roll into the weekend, however, the NWS warns of more showers and thunderstorms, particularly on Friday night when chances of precipitation skyrocket to 90%.
The tempestuous weather continues into Saturday, with storms potentially punctuating a wet day. The South wind, increasing to 10 to 15 mph, may further unsettle outdoor plans with gusts as strong as 25 mph. A slight break in the clouds is forecasted for Sunday, but Knoxville isn't quite clear of the volatile spring clime.
A Hazardous Weather Outlook was also issued by the NWS early this morning. It warns of the potential for localized flooding, especially in southeastern Tennessee and southwestern North Carolina, due to the imminent downpours. Officials have urged residents to stay vigilant and tuned to further advisories, especially as the risk of flooding persists with the impending second round of heavy rain expected Friday, reports the NWS.
