Ice clashed and spirits were high this weekend as Knoxville welcomed women's collegiate hockey teams for the much-anticipated Knoxville Women’s College Hockey Classic. In a display of athletic prowess and community outreach, teams from Auburn, Alabama, and Georgia showcased their skills at Cool Sports in Farragut, according to WVLT.
The event wasn't just about competition: it also extended an olive branch to the future generation of female ice warriors. A skills clinic was hosted for the budding talents of the Smoky Mountain Lady Wild hockey program — a group that bears the distinction of being Knoxville's premier elite girls' hockey team. This essential program is carving out a space for young girls to hit the rinks, without parents having to drive hours every weekend for their kids to play.
Every Friday evening, blades carve the ice as Head Coaches Jeff Monckton and Samantha Haase, alongside goalie coach Ally Derthick, mentor the Lady Wild athletes. The clinic emphasized skill development and forged lifelong memories and friendships on the rink, as celebrated in a heartwarming post by the team, as per smokymountainladywild. They expressed gratitude towards the college teams for their support and partnership, saying "It just means more!! Girls can play hockey too!!"
Commendation also goes to @a_lin14 for orchestrating this invigorating event, where the clash of sticks and cheers echoed the sentiment of equality and sportsmanship in athletics. Is anyone interested in joining the revolution on the ice led by the Lady Wild?
