Knoxville's streets are reportedly safer with murders and shootings taking a significant drop in 2023. The city witnessed a 33% decrease in murders, with figures declining from 36 in 2022 to 24 last year, WATE reports. In the East District alone, murders plummeted by 54%, with 11 reported compared to the previous year's 24.

Falling in step with this trend, non-fatal shootings decreased by 12% from 86 in 2022 to 76 in 2023. The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) pointed to strategic alterations in policing for the downtrend, including a department re-organization and a transition towards a problem-solving policing model. "Several factors contributed to the reduction, including the re-organization of the Field Operations Bureau and re-establishment of the Central District, which expanded the number of districts from two to three," a department report shared by WBIR elaborates.

While the Knoxville community will likely find solace in these declining figures, the city grappled with increases in other crime categories. Aggravated assaults saw an 8% increase, spiking from 911 to 987 instances, while "other" assaults surged by 44%, according to data recorded by KPD. Simple assaults, however, saw a slight 1% decrease. Additionally, drug offenses rose by a troubling 14%, from 2,686 in 2022 to 3,049 in 2023, as noted by WVLT.

On a brighter note, property crime fell by roughly 15% with a significant 34% drop in vehicle burglaries and an 11% decrease in vehicle thefts. KPD's strategic police efforts also boast a more than 70% closure rate on murder cases in 2023, which, according to Chief of Police Paul Noel, exceeds the national average for law enforcement agencies. Despite unsettling increases in certain crime types, these improvements in Knoxville’s crime rate present a glimmer of hope and a testament to the city's evolving policing strategies.
